Home Remedies for OAB / Incontinence

By Dr. Veena G.D.

Here are a few important tips which can relieve you from the stress incontinence. We hope making these small changes in day to day life, would help you gain better control over your OAB.

  • Practice “Double Voiding”. After emptying the bladder, relax for a few moments and then try voiding again. This helps empty the bladder completely.

  • Void every 3 - 4 hrs regularly, whether you get an urge or not.

  • Wearing easily removable clothing would be helpful.

  • When in new terrain, identify the bathroom and check out the easy access beforehand.

  • Whenever you are exercising or doing some vigorous physical activity wear a panty liner or a sanitary napkin as a precaution.

  • Don’t drink too much of caffeine or alcohol drink. Caffeine and alcohol act as diuretics.

  • Avoid drinking too less of water. Too little drinking will lead to dehydration and urinary tract infection. Make it a point to drink upto 3 liters of water everyday.

  • Ask your doctor whether any of the medications (prescribed or Over the Counter Drugs) that you may be taking, will make your incontinence worse.

Additionally, following few steps will slowly make changes in the status of incontinence. But these need to be practiced with patience to gain effect over a time period.

  • Pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises strengthen the pelvic muscles so as to have better control.

  • In case of constipation, fiber intake should be increased. It could be in the form of fruits, vegetables, beans or whole grains.

  • If you are overweight, then losing some weight would also help.

  • If you smoke, quit. Firstly because nicotine acts as a diuretic. Secondly, quitting would help reduce coughing, causing reduction in your problem with incontinence.
